Summary

The current project focus on willow for building of living structures and training of local farmers of two communities from the South of Moldova of the biosphere reserve area on erosion and flood control . Building ofwillow living structures on eroded land, e.g. river banks decrease the level of suspended particles in the waterways, stabilize the erosion and reduce the water table, thus lessening flooding. The technique is simple, cost-effective and easily transferable.

Challenge

Soil erosion in Moldova is among the biggest concerns. More than 36 % of farmland is eroded, with substantial economic, social and environmental impact. Slobozia Mare and Valeni are located in the South of Moldova, where erosion processes are common. Flat zones are alternating with steep hills that sinks large amount of sediments into waterways, this being intensified during flooding. Farmers do not have enough financial resources and knowledge on soil restoration and erosion control.

Solution

The site conditions will be investigated in cooperation with local stakeholders. Willow living structures will be made of long willow canes, interwoven between willow stakes. Willow cuttings will be acquired from natural stands with the help of school volunteers and some purchased from local horticulturalists. Local farmers will receive hands-on training on willow planting, coppicing and weaving of living structures.

Long-Term Impact

Willow bio-engineering structures contribute to stabilization of river banks, reducing the risk of landslides. These structures increase infiltration, temporarily capturing and storing runoff, thus hindering the formation of flash floods. After two-three years, the planted willow can offer great material for restoring of eroded land and reduce the risk of flooding in the area. The trained farmers (100 men and women) will share knowledge to their neighbors and neighborhood villages.
