Tree Growing to Save the Planet

Warm greetings and thank you very much for your generous support to our initiative growing trees in order to improve biodiversity and provide income to small farmers. In the past year we encouraged farmers to grow trees by informing them that trees will have multiple benefits which include income, shade, food, shelter and so on and some of them have started tree farming. We train them to plant trees in open spaces in their farms as well as in boundaries while they also grow food crops such as corn and legumes. One of the problems we found out that after planting the trees are not cared for and grasses takes over. In this case we are enlisting the help of children and youth so that they help in taking care of the trees. We were able to train and deploy 25 of them this reporting period and we will engage some more in the coming months. Again, thank you so much for your help.

Warm greetings and thank you very much for your generous support to our initiative saving the planet by tree growing. The problem we initially met with this initiative is that growers would select the particular trees they want to raise in their farms and their major focus is whether there is economic value to what they will be growing. With this situation we promoted the growing of high-valued fruit trees like jackfruit, mango, lanzones, durian, among others rather than the growing of timber trees. We showed them the benefits of fruit trees in terms of primarily income but also with other benefits also like prevention of soil erosion and enriching the soil. This project is timely and important especially now that climate change is threatening the basic life and livelihoods of the people, from all over the world, nobody is exempt anymore. The growing of trees assumes great importance during this time when we need to feed farmers and improve climatic conditions as well as improve water retention capacities of our soils. Time is running out and we are doing our outmost in order to provide for tree growing inputs to local farmers. Thanks so much to supporters like you we are making this happen with great success. This reporting period we are able to distribute a total of 25,000 seedlings of fruit and timber trees to 320 farmers and we are following-up the care and maintenance of these trees. Growing trees has multiple benefits like shade, feed for the animals from the leaves, shelter from timber, furniture and household wooden items and many more. Trees absorbs carbons and store it in the roots as well as the fruit, flowers, nuts provide food, medicine, perfume and a thousand more benefits. With your generous support we are starting to build a seedling nursery with the intent to produce seedlings that will be grown by our farmers. We are mixing the growing of fruit and timber trees, bamboo, vines, grasses and many other important species. Our distribution scheme will be for free for remote and poor communities as well as we will sell some of the seedlings to interested organizations, farmers' associations and social enterprises so that we can use the proceeds in order to grow more. In this way, this initiative will be sustainable. Hoping for your continuing generosity and support.
