Around this time of year at the Community Services Center we see an increase in the number of people seeking counseling and mental health support. Whether it is someone's first year overseas or they've been living abroad for decades, there is always something bittersweet about the holiday season. Homesicknes and loneliness can amplify feelings of hopelessness and depression.
We are grateful you have supported us in the past, and we know you value mental health services. Can you help us reach our goal of raising enough money to keep our Crisis Line open through Chinese New Year? Please help us today with a donation of NTD$450. We can pay to keep our emergency line open to those who feel overwhelmed or hopeless during the upcoming holiday season by raising a total of just NTD$36,000.
The Center's Crisis Line has received more than 90 calls this year, and is a resource available to everyone thanks to the generosity of donors like you.
Happy Holidays and thank you from all of us at The Center!
We are gearing up for our annual auction! Everyone at The Center is working furiously to organize the auction items, prepare our program, gather our donors, distribute tickets and rally the community to come together for an evening to commemorate our 30 years of service in Taipei. At the auction we will celebrate success stories from The Center like this one from Anne:*
My meetings with a counselor at the Center came at just in time. I had been suffering anxiety attacks and depression for several months but wasn’t sure what I could do about it. I had strong support from my family and a couple of close friends, but it wasn’t enough. I saw several doctors but none really seemed to understand me and their drugs made me feel worse. I was scared I would not be able to stop taking medicine. Talking with my counselor helped me feel more comfortable with myself. She also introduced me to the right doctor who was very sensible and made me feel more confident that I could recover. I met with my counselor over several months. From twice a week at first, our sessions became less frequent as I became stronger. Now I’m happy to say after a very bad year, I am back to normal, even stronger, knowing myself better.
Because of donations like yours, more people in Taiwan will be able to find the mental health support they need. Please continue to help us, through our Global Giving page and at our Auction on October 20. Thank you for supporting The Community Center!
Our “Support Mental Health and Wellness in Taiwan” Global Giving project received over 80 donations and raised over US$12,000. We are moved and extremely grateful for this large show of support. This was the first time the Community Services Center has ever run a campaign like this and the results far exceeded our expectations.
As many of you know, the Crisis Line is a service that The Center provides so individuals can call to get immediate emergency telephone support, assistance, and counseling after Center business hours and on weekends. This past month we received twice as many crisis calls as we have ever received in one month. The funds from the campaign have been critical to our ability to respond to such a high volume of calls.
The vast majority of the 34 calls were severe panic attacks, which come with severe cases of anxiety. There is significant evidence that anxiety is on the rise globally, and last month certainly bore witness to that global trend here in Taiwan. When we see this level of need in the community, we want to ensure that the Center will always be here.
Please share our story with others and perhaps they, too, will consider supporting The Center as we continue to carry out our mission to support, engage and inform.
Thank you again for your support and donations to the “Support Mental Health and Wellness in Taiwan” campaign.
