Challenge

Kibera Slums is the biggest in Nairobi and is inhabited by poor and vulnerable members of the community. People here live in shanties measuring 10 x 10 ft and which electrical grids are not existent or unstable. Families use fossil fuel or firewood at night for lighting. Besides health hazards, school-going children are not able to read or carry out their homework in a favourable environment. There is a need to not only support the children in their learning but also a need for clean energy.

Solution

We intend to provide 2000 households with Solar Lamps purchased from our trusted partners and give them to these households free of charge. Solar lamps are safe, reliable and durable. The sun is readily available in Kenya, thus no cost to charge the Solar Lantern. School children will be at peace with learning during the night. Expensive fossil energy and health hazards associated with it will be no more. Frequent accidents caused by illegal electricity connections will also be eliminated.

Long-Term Impact

The project will improve the living standards of the affected families in the following ways:- a) They will have clean lighting in their dwellings at no cost thereby saving the amount that would have been used in buying fossil energy or firewood. b) Health hazards emanating from the use of fossil fuel and smokes from firewood will be curbed. c)School-going children from these families will improve their academic grades as they are able to read. They in turn will be able to give back.
