Because of COVID-19 pandemic, physical presence classes were not held in Nepal for almost one and half years. As the pandemic was gradually reduced, the schools started physical presence classes. However, preventive measures are still required to be taken.
To support the students coming from low income families, ECCA provided reusable washable cloth face mask in six schools located in Hetauda Sub Metropolitan, ward 19, Bagmati Province. This has helped the students to come and study.
The Principal of Ganesh Basic School thanked ECCA and the donor agency for providing the washable face mask for the students (and teachers), which helped them to come to school.
Shree Janajyoti Secondary School is located in Janagal, Banepa-10, Kavrepalanchok district, Nepal. Community Drinking Water Project constructed an intake at a surface water source located uphill (around 600 meter from school). At the intake, this project allocated one connection outlet (of half inch diameter) for the school. Underground cement tank (20,000 liter capacity) was also constructed at the school premises from the government fund. However, due to shortage of fund, pipe connection from the water source intake to the school’s underground tank was pending, for which the school approached ECCA for the support. ECCA supported for the pipe purchase and labor (to lay the pipe).
The work is in progress. After completion of the works, the school will have sufficient water, which will ease the daily life of students making them happy when going to school.
When child friendly facilities are developed in the school, the children love to go to school. Considering this aspect, separate child friendly hand washing station and drinking water station were constructed at Shree Shikshya Vikash Secondary School, Letang, Morang (in east Nepal). These facilities benefitted 655 students (305 boys and 350 girls).
Water tank containing treated drinking water was connected to the drinking water station through a separate plumbing-piping system. The height of tap at the drinking water station was kept at different levels for easy reach of students of lower class.
School teacher Mr. Devi Prasad thanked ECCA and the donor agency for the support, and shared that the students were very excited to use such child friendly facilities.
The present COVID-19 pandemic has affected the regular studies of many children. Though online classes are held in the city, such facility is not available in rural areas (due to unavailability of internet access and poor economic condition of the family). In these rural areas, physical presence class is the only option.
ECCA supported Deurali Secondary School, Thani Basic School, Sitadevi Secondary School and Ram Secondary School located in the rural villages of Dhankuta district (in eastern Nepal) with COVID-19 prevention materials. All together 500 liters of chlorine solution (a disinfectant, branded as WATASOL), 600 face masks (washable), 4 boxes gloves, 300 hand washing soaps and 4 spray bottles were equally distributed to these four schools. This has helped the schools to open, making it possible for students to come and study.
Mr. Purna, teacher of Deurali Secondary School shared, “The support received from ECCA will contribute to avoid students' and school staffs’ exposure to COVID-19 infection. Due to shortage of fund and such materials, we were facing difficulty. We can now continue disinfection as well as practice personal hygiene and operate regular class. Thank you so much, ECCA, for considering our request.”
ECCA supported 20 needy students from Thani Basic School located in the outskirts of Dhankuta District (eastern Nepal) with stationery items, which comprised of copies, pens, pencils, erasers and sharpener. These materials were handed over to the school Child Club and were distributed to the students by organizing a small event.
Ms. Rasaili, teacher at Thani Basic School, said, “this area is backward in terms of education and facilities. Thus, the student support program of ECCA is very effective. We are very thankful to get stationeries, which will help our children to continue their education. We look forward for more assistance in the future.”
