The School of Leadership, Afghanistan (SOLA) is Afghanistan's first and only boarding school for girls, enrolling nearly 100 girls in grades pre-6 through 11. This project will enhance our capacity to maintain continuity of learning during our ongoing study abroad program and amid the global COVID-19 outbreak, allowing us to safely offer our students a remote and online educational environment.
The Taliban's return to power presents extraordinary unknowns in Afghanistan -- among them, the future of girls' education in a nation where the illiteracy rate among Afghan adolescent girls is already a staggering 63%, nearly double the rate for boys.
In August 2021, SOLA successfully brought our students and faculty from Afghanistan to Rwanda to begin a semester abroad. We are committed to providing Afghan girls a rigorous education, and we are equally committed to our students' health and security. An online educational model allows us to meet both these commitments, and allows our students to continue their schooling at a time when girls' education is globally at risk.
At this time of profound change in Afghanistan, SOLA's mission remains constant. Our leadership curriculum prepares students to address many of the issues that act as barriers to women's visibility in Afghanistan, while simultaneously making female leadership a norm. Our online programming will provide each of these students with a unique educational experience, giving them the skills to stand as members of the best-educated generation in their nation's history.
