Sheep farming brings out economic solvency
Sheep farming brings out economic solvency

BEDS had given 20 sheep to improve their economic situation during Covid-19. Recently BEDS has supported 15 sheep to the villagers. The coastal people have taken care of the livestock on daily basis. As the villagers are poor, they are rearing the sheep through grazing for ensuring good nutrition. The grazing system also helps environment for producing new forage or grasses. It is tough to provide supplementary feed properly.

In the period of rainy season, it is tough to ensure grazing for sheep on regular basis. At this time, the poor people face a lot of problems to ensure regular food. They have not enough money for purchasing the supplementary feed. So, the poor villagers are collecting green grass from the surrounding area. In the meantime, the members have sold ten sheep at eight thousand taka (8000 BDT). This money helps to bear the education cost of children as well as the food cost of family members. They hope to expand the farm at about 100 number of sheep.

BEDS is currently trying to raise funds from GlobalGiving platform in order to help those marginal people in the way of income generation for their better future with better economic conditions. We also hope that through taking support from various corners they will be able to use their products for earning their sound livelihood.

We would like to thank all our donors for being so kind to us so far. We are requesting all our kind donors to start monthly recurring donation. For recurring donation, please visit the following link;

Fish production in BANOJIBI agrofarm
Fish production in BANOJIBI agrofarm

We are the members of fishing sector of Banojibi Agrofarm. We had no sound knowledge about fish farming at previous time. So, we did not earn our livelihood by fish cultivation.

BEDS had given us fish fry, feed, lime etc. for fish cultivation during the pandemic of Covid-19 period. We tried our level best for increasing the production volume. Then, BEDS also gives us capacity-building training for fish cultivation. After receiving the training and partial support for purchasing an aerator, we hope that our production of fish in per decimal of the pond will increase. If the production is good then we will get more profit than before.

Now we are trying regularly to provide supplementary feed. After setting of aerator, the growth of fish is satisfactory and it takes more food than before. We all Banojibi members of fishing sector are engaging ourselves in the fish cultivation process for earning better livelihood.

Creation of alternate livelihood
Creation of alternate livelihood

BEDS had given us native hen, sheep and duck. We have prepared Agrofarm and doing various agriculture activities such as duck and hen farming, vegetable cultivation, sheep rearing etc. In the region of Sundarbans males collect honey from Sundarbans. After collection of honey, they come home. Then they are busy with further processing and preservation of honey. But the wax is not used by them. Now ae are trying to use the wax for preparing various sculpture of various animals such as tiger, turtle, dolphin, birds, crocodiles etc. It helps to create a alternative livelihood and we are earning more money through selling it.

Hen farming boosts the income of coastal women
Hen farming boosts the income of coastal women

BEDS had given 200 hens to improve their economic situation during Covid-19. The villagers who had given the support, are taking care of the livestock on daily basis. As the hens need less care and management, poor women can easily rear the hens. It is easy to raise, needs less space for rearing, and requires low inputs of feed, housing facilities, and management. Now it is a matter of glad that, twenty broody hens who laid eggs (12 – 20 per hen), stop laying eggs and will sit on the day and night to warm them up. They also provide nutritious supplementary feed to the hen. For this reason, the hens are giving egg regular basis. So, coastal women are so satisfied for rearing the hen and earn money from it.

Throughout the year the coastal people go to the Sundarbans to collect honey, catch fish and crabs, collect leaves, and others. The People who depend on the Sundarbans resource harvesting fall at huge risk as the Bangladesh government has issued strict laws on forest resource harvesting. Also, for unplanned resource harvesting; the natural resources have degraded at a high rate. Those people have maintained their life under the breadline.

The Omicron variant of the coronavirus has now been detected in Bangladesh. So, people have passed their life through anxiety and fear. Moreover, people have no capability enough to start their daily income-generating activities. Livestock can be a great source for them to raise their income as well as for fulfilling their nutritional requirement also.

BEDS is currently trying to raise funds from GlobalGiving platform in order to help those marginal people in the way of income generation for their better future with better economic conditions. We also hope that through taking support from various corners they will be able to use their products for earning their sound livelihood.
