Summary

Poverty and lack of access to menstrual products in rural Kenya often force young school girls to resort to unhygienic solutions and miss school while they are on their period. Our project aims to equip 10,000 girls with a comprehensive menstrual health education and a long term solution: a Ruby Cup. These cups last for up to 10 years and ensure that no girls need to stay home while she is menstruating. Girls face enough barriers to their education, their period should not be one of them.

Challenge

Kenya is ranked 8th globally for poverty, with 36.1% of the population in extreme poverty. A major factor contributing to poverty in Kenya is the lack of menstrual health management. 65% of girls are unable to afford sanitary products in Kenya which means they are forced to stay home from school every month during their period. Menstruation causes one in ten girls in Kenya to miss at least twenty percent of their classes, causing many girls in rural areas to drop out of school all together.

Solution

Cross World Africa's Menstrual Health Workshops will provide a safe space for 10,000 adolescent girls to learn about their periods and teach them the proper way to use and care for their menstrual cup. Moreover, discussion surrounding taboo subjects helps decrease social stigma and increase body acceptance. Ultimately, these workshops create an empowered network of girls and allow them to continue their schooling while they are on their period.

Long-Term Impact

This project will ensure menstruation is not a barrier to education for thousands of Kenyan girls. Reusable menstrual cups pave the path to healthy menstrual cycles for up to ten years. Empowering these girls to continue their education will increase their chances of success and employment in the future. These girls will be less likely to miss class and more likely to graduate; better qualifying them for their potential careers. The impact of this project will last for a lifetime.
