Summary

To create classes that develop job interest skills so that Deaf students are able to compete for jobs in Guatemala. Due to communication barriers it is difficult for Deaf adults to secure employment. Public Education does not provide an accessible education so Deaf students are excluded from having a normal life, being able to work, raise a family and be independent. Prevocational classes at LAVOSI will have a lifetime impact. Your financial support will make all the difference.

Challenge

Many Deaf students who rely on Sign Language are completely lost in schools as no teachers are signing to them. They can sit for years in school not learning anything. Their parents learn about LAVOSI but by the time they begin LAVOSI classes, Deaf students are already years behind. There is no way for them to catch up and eventually attend a university. However Prevocational Classes will open doors for job opportunities so students can find jobs and live independently.

Solution

The prevocational classes of culinary, sewing and construction will introduce students to career opportunities and allow students to test out their interests and abilities. Also these classes will be skill development focused. Students will make products they can be proud to create and begin to understand the value of developing specific job skills. Guatemala's economy has opportunities for our students in all three areas we are focusing on. Also these a life long skills.

Long-Term Impact

When students only attend academic classes they are limited in preparation for a life of independence. Often an academic education leads a student to a university program. Many of the Deaf students who attend LAVOSI are years behind and attending a university is not an option. Vocational Schools in Guatemala are not accessible to Deaf students as their teachers do not use sign language. LAVOSI is the perfect setting to provide a balance of academic and prevocational training.
