Prevention of Human Trafficking in Nepal

We will work with marginalized women and children of Makwanpur and Parsa district to prevent human trafficking and unsafe migration and raise mass awareness on these issues through mobilization of community groups called Surveillance Groups. Human Trafficking is one of the serious problems in Nepal. It is a means of exploitation of women and children by forcing them into the sex industry, domestic and factory labor, organ transplantation and illegal adoption.

Factors like poverty, lack of education, social discrimination and exclusion, non-functional family structures, open border, archaic laws and ineffective law enforcement and policy implementation mechanisms are the main causes for the increasing of human trafficking in Nepal. Other socio-cultural factors include low socio-economic status of women and girls in the society, gender discrimination, domestic violence, early marriage, changing life style and lack of job opportunities.

We will form Surveillance Groups in 6 most trafficking prone villages of Makwanpur and Parsa and provide them capacity building training. They will work on prevention and raising awareness of human trafficking at community level. They will be linked with local government to access fund from there to conduct awareness and protection activities. We will install hoarding boards and graffiti in the most vulnerable areas and transit points to raise mass awareness against human trafficking.

Long-Term Impact

Formation of surveillance groups and their capacity building activities will have long term impact in prevention and protection of women and girls from trafficking and unsafe migration. They will actively work in their community in close collaboration with local government, local police and community organizations to access the local government fund to raise mass awareness through different activities. We will provide support for income generation to 5 trafficking survivors.
