Sponsor small agro-ecological farmers in Colombia

Dear GlobalGiving community, what’s up ?

It seemed important to us to shake up our habits and to offer you something different. If we talk to you very regularly about our solidarity actions and our projects, it now seems important to us to talk a little more about ourselves. Who are we? How does PSF work?

Our Foundation was founded in 2007 in France by Columbian exchange students in the city of Clermont-Ferrand. Proyectar Sin Fronteras was born from the friendship between two Colombian students in France, Luis Salamanca and Juan Forero, and their desire to positively impact vulnerable communities with their knowledge and experience in agroecology.

After launching a pilot project in 2007, PSF has evolved and structured its actions. Thus, the Sembrando Confianza programme was born, through which we aim to reduce the economic vulnerability and improve the environmental sustainability of its participants by using agroecology as a tool for social transformation.

PSF's work is anchored in the United Nations 2030 Agenda by contributing to 5 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Each PSF project aims to support the construction and consolidation of the social and economic fabric in marginalized communities. We work with women farmers, we organise food distributions and workshops in poor neighbourhoods (including environmental education and menstrual and sexual education). Our offices are located in Bogota, Colombia.

All our projects are carried out in Colombia and more precisely in the Bogota region. Our team is composed of Colombian employees and young French volunteers in civic service. Some of our employees are in charge of the implementation of the projects and their financing and others are responsible for the implementation of our weekly market: every Thursday, we deliver to our customers fresh organic products produced by our partner farmers.

We are pleased to be able to share our projects with you and we hope that they will catch your attention. Please feel free to read our previous reports and contact us if you have any questions!

Once again, we want to thank our GlobalGiving Community and all of our donors for their support and help.

Stay tuned for our next reports and actions on the field!

Dear GlobalGiving community,

Part of the work of promoting more sustainable and resilient modes of production and consumption has to do with supporting the adoption of agroecological practices, that is why, PSF team carries out regular visits to the field to evaluate small farmers practices and based on the observations, make recommendations to improve production.

From March 14th to 16th, PSF's agronomists went to meet 12 female farmers in La Calera, Cundinamarca with the objective of evaluating their practices and performing a characterization that will allow the team to know them better and guide them to produce higher quality products and then  integrate them into our farmers network.

Our project allows participants to benefit from 16 months of accompaniment and to receive a certification issued by PSF as an agro-ecological producer. This certification helps producers to sell their products through our Sembrando Confianza market in Bogota as well as helping them access new marketing channels such as entrepreneurship fairs and farmers’ markets.

During the visits we inquired about their socio-economic resources, their means of production and their farm in order to target their needs and potential. We had the chance to learn more about the methods of fruit and vegetable production. These questionnaires were then entered into our database of all the producers in our agro-ecological and organic network

Within the next months, we will continue our information analysis to then create action plans for each farm, implement improvements that contribute to producing more and better products and certify them under the Participatory Guarantee System.

Please, follow us on our social media to know more about our projects !

We invite you to support us and to help us to achieve our solidarity goals.

Thank you for reading !

Dear GlobalGiving community,

We are very happy to announce that on August 9 we completed the agroecological certification process for 3 more farmers!

In this case, Oliva, Alex, and Aida de Subachoque shared with various actors in the food system (restaurants, strategic allies, bloggers, and consumers), they opened the doors of their gardens to us, and together we shared knowledge in the midst of planting, harvesting activities, a delicious lunch, and recognition of the food plants.

These visits are possible thanks to your contribution and participation in our weekly agroecological market and the support of organizations that support Participatory Guarantee Systems as much as we do.

You might wonder what the Participatory Guarantee Systems are, and here we have some information for you: Participatory Guarantee Systems - PGS - are systems that certify and promote, in a participatory manner, certain production conditions of an agroecosystem, in this case, agroecological production.

The PGS's entail a close relationship between the producer, the consumer, and the promoters of the markets, betting on the common welfare, through mutual commitment and the active participation of the interested parties.
The PGS's are based on the participants' own will, promoting their d honest, clear, and trustworthy communication.

Thank you for continue supporting clean and responsible production and consumption in Colombia.

Best regards,

Luisa P.

Within the framework of the Agroecological certification in Colombia called Participatory Guarantee System (SPG), two types of visits are considered; a technical one and a participatory one.  In this case, we visited three farmers to conduct a technical review of the agricultural, livestock, processing and socio-economic dimensions.

The visits were conducted by 3 agroecology engineers from the foundation's team and took place in La Pradera, Subachoque, a municipality located west of Bogota, with which the Sembrando Confianza market has a large participation by linking the market to an agricultural network called Asociación Red Agroecológica Campesina de Subachoque - ARAC (Subachoque Agroecological Farmers Network Association).

These technical visits were carried out in two stages: a general review of the agricultural and livestock components of the property, as well as a review of the spaces available to carry out food transformation and storage processes. In a second stage, five sustainability indicators were applied to seek recommendations for improvement based on the specific characteristics of the entire agroecosystem.

These indicators were developed thanks to the donations received and are focused on measuring the following:

- Profitability of the productive unit
- Level of specific diversity
- Self-consumption index
- Level of packaging technology
- Participation and training

This led to the incorporation of improvements in the agroecological certification process in the Bogotá region. We met with the other certifying organizations and the university UNIMINUTO (the only university in Bogota that teaches a degree in Agroecological Engineering), made improvements on the initial proposal and finally agreed to implement this process of measuring indicators at the level of the region in order to ensure the quality of the process and have more relevant information to present to the national network of family agriculture (RENAF), the entity that legally represents peasant, family and community farmers in the implementation and monitoring of public policies for small farmers in Colombia.

After this visits we made a plan of improvements and recommendations for each farm and ended the certification process for 3 farmers more for the next year and a half.

The next technical and participatory visits are scheduled for August 9, 19, 23 and 30 to certify 6 more farmers.

Thanks to all the people who have donated to this cause, we will continue to improve the quality of life of the farmers through a formal and certified link to the food market in Bogota.

Rural socio-business training class
Rural socio-business training class

In August 2020, the national government has established a strategy to promote the participation of small-scale farmers in the food purchase market. However, there is still much to do in terms of quality, logistics, technologies, and partnership between private and public stakeholders to achieve this.

To contribute to the fulfillment of this great objective, in the first period of work, we are focusing on strengthening rural socio-business capacities. From November 2020 to February 2021, we have carried out 8 face-to-face socio-business training workshops at the restaurant La Conejera, located in La Pradera, Subcahoque (following all biosecurity measures), did weekly monitoring of 19 rural families and implement 3 certifications within the Participatory Guarantee System (SPG), the only label approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Colombia that certifies agroecological production and products.

The different workshops and accompaniment we've done with these 19 rural families attracted the attention of the local authorities because, in their own words they've never -seen a group of farmers so motivated learning about numbers- and as a result of this, we are now creating an improvement plan to integrate this model about rural socio-business and family capacities into the development plan of Subachoque's Municipality.

Thanks to our GlobalGiving generous community and in particular to a generous donation we received, we are able to continue supporting small-scale farmers from the surrounding areas of Bogota by going to visit their two times per week and, if we continue receiving the financial support needed, by the end of June, we hope to be achieved the whole 19 SPG certifications previewed for this semester.

In the photos you will find some of the classes we share and also some photos of Inés, Pedro, and Albeiro, the first three farmers to obtain the SPG certification.

Thank you all for your support, let's continue transforming the conventional agri-food system by promoting safe, nutritious, and responsible food for a better future but also improving the peasant family's present.
