Big smile from Kunhao back to you!
Big smile from Kunhao back to you!

Dear Magic Hospital community,

In the light of the developments regarding COVID-19, we want to say that our thoughts are with you and everybody  affected by the virus around the globe. We very much hope that you, your families and friends are all well and safe.

Due to the uncertainty and risks that came with the spread of the Covid outbreak, we had decided end of January to put all our activities in China on hold. Our activites will resume when the situation is more stable and the safety of the children, staff and volunteers is again guaranteed. We are seeing the first shimmers of hope that this may be soon...

However, we could bring a smile before the lockdown to 8 year old Kunhao, a boy with Down syndrom.

Kunhao lives in a poor area in Guizhou province. He had to undergo heart surgery in Huaxin hospital earlier this year. This is where our volunteers from our Playtime program met him. The sweetness of the boy and the love of his parents touched us deeply. He recovered well from the heart surgery, surrounded by his doting family. However, he was not going back to school, as for him attending to school is a challenge in itself

Education and proper care have been shown to improve quality of life for children with Down syndrome. So we wanted to support him in his physical and mental development, especially while his school education being interrupted.

After exchanges with the boy's mother, Mirjam, MH China Director decided to provide educational and developmental toys and tools for this boy through our Abracadbra program.

The shopping cart filled quickly with toys and tools stuff this wonderful boy: wooden music instruments, Duplo, Play doh, learning puzzles and a drawing board, and a four wheel bike which will be sent to him directly.

Laughter and smiles remain important, especially in these challenging times. His mother sent us some images, and we hope his smile warms your heart and brings you some positive thoughts and distractions.

Thank you for your ongoing support, please continue to stay well and safe, and we hope till soon!

Warmly, Claudia

Happiness!

As a former volunteer and staff of Magic Hospital China, she understands its complexity of national and international coordination with placed based program design.  Along with a strong belief in social impact and systems innovation, she has a passion for supporting holistic, effective, and inclusive means of trauma healing in children, both physical and emotional.

We are excited that we can welcome her to be part of the trustees of Magic Hospital.

Do you still have another minute? Here some more quick updates:

Dear Magic Hospital supporter,

I am happy to reconnect with you, as I would like to share some exciting news.

But first a question: do you remember the last time you stood in front of a problem, or ran out of time for a deadline, or maybe you had to move house, and help was magically just around the corner? Wasn't this a relief? There are moments when we need help, to progress in our endevours, to overcome obstacles.

You know us mostly via our programs in China. You may be less aware of the fact that we developed and managed a 3-year project called "Kids Open - getting out of the rough in France. It was a Golf project for autistic children. Since we handed it over to the autistic school, we have been pondering what we should do next in Europe.

However, we also knew from that there are many small nonprofits who are struggling and need help. So, we thought: instead of launching our own program, why not choose to help others? In the end, helping others is why we are active in the nonprofit world. Wouldn’t you agree that makes good sense?

This is the mission of our new initiative, the Exceleratorproject.  We see a great need and opportunity in lending a helping hand to other organisations. The project is still in its early stages, but we already have an appealing website with a cool 1-minute video clip. Please do take a minute and visit it.

We continue of course our multiple programs in China,  one of them being the Clown Program which you so generously and kindly support.  We believe it is important to let you know what else we are doing,  so I wanted to send you this brief update. If you have any questions or suggestions,  I am delighted to hear from you. You can reach me on president@magichospital.org

Thank you for your time, your interest and steadfast loyalty in Magic Hospital!

Kindest regards

Magda The

Magic Bean day at Huaxin Hospital
Magic Bean day at Huaxin Hospital
Dear Magic Hospital community,

Today was a special day for the children, for you, for us, and we want to share it with you.

Today we launched our 'Magic Moments’ program at Huaxin Hospital. You may recall from having spoken about the Huaxin hospital: children are hospitalised here when they are in need of a heart surgery. Normally, volunteers from our Playtime program go and play with the children saturday mornings. It's also a good moment to bring some relief to the worried and anxious parents.
We also went today on this special occasion. We brought little magical flower pots and worked with the children to plant their  ‘Magic Bean’. Older kids helped the younger ones to plant, and those kids who could not join in because they had to remain in bed. They were all so lovely.
We hope that while they care for their bean and see it sprout it brings them joy and hope. And takes their mind off the hospital routine and their fears.

Years back, we did the Magic Beans project with a Parent group in Guangzhou whose children suffered from cancer.  It was such a sweet and simple activity, it lit up children's eyes. A gift from the British Chamber in Beijing made today possible.
We will expand the Magic Moment program to other hospitals as well. True, Magic Moment is a bit of a melting pot of activities: the Magic Beans, the Abracadabra wish program and the Holiday Gift Giving - however all have in common to bring special moments to children who need them dearly.
We hope you like what you read. Please continue to share your passion and goodwill for children through us. On this happy note, Claudia and I wish you a wonderful weekend. Thank you for your ongoing support!
Be a doctor and send a smile.

Your sincerly

Mirjam Thieme

Dear all,

we hope you are taking a bit of a breather during the summer, spending quality time with your family. So we thought we piggyback on your leisure time and send you a short update.

Farewell to our clown Jean

He brought so much happiness and laughter to the children in China and Nepal. Before his departure  he wanted to once again spread the joy. We visited the Gucheng school for migrant children. The event focussed on happiness and kindness, letting the children draw and then act out some of their drawings, and of course clowning. It ended with a few minutes of meditation. Thank you so much for all the laughter, smiles, wonderful and unforgettable events, Jean! The children in Beijing and we all from Magic Hospital will miss you, till we hopefully see you again!!

The weekly visits in Beijing Ertong Yiyuan and bi-monthly in Beida continue with Mr. Liu

Our Magic Band visits Bo'Ai Hospital

In a previous report we mentioned that we also have a Magic Band now. Just like laughter, studies show that music has incredible health benefits. Bo'Ai hospital has a special center for autistic children. For autistic children regular musical activities such as singing and playing instruments can help improve with their social interaction, verbal communication, initiating behaviour. The kids were handed out some musical instruments. Kids, parents as well as band had a great time.

Swimming with the children from Bethel orphanage

Bethel is home to visually impaired children.  Going to the swimming pool was a big success last time, so as part of our Outdoorsy program we organised another visit. It was a refreshing fun for all. As a special treat we had George and Lucy, both cast members from CATS (curently touring China) coming along.

Another Outdoorsy Day - Soccer camp!

Students from the Yuanming migrant school came to visit Dulwich College Beijing. Dulwich school football coach Mr. Hurworth and few senior school students organized football drills for the kids. When it became too hot on the field, the fun continued on the playground.

We hope you like what you see.  Global Giving will be running a Little by Little campaign during the week 12th - 16th. This is the week that small donations add up to big change. Global giving will match donations up to USD 50 while funds remain. We hope you  consider to make another donations during that week.

It is you who make our projects happen, so thank you for letting us be the trustee of your kindness and goodwill.

Yours truly

Claudia
