Can I Live, Inc’s President and CEO RW Jonesalso known as “The Welfare Escape Artist,” teaches low-income families how to protect and grow their income, while receiving various social services benefits (i.e., Subsidized Housing, SNAP, Medicaid, etc.). Jones who spearheads the organization's program development is closing the gaps in poverty and raising the bar for social services programs.  Jones tells us that we don’t have a poverty problem in America–often quoting Charles Darwin “If the misery of our poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.”

Moms are not on welfare because they made a few bad decisions.  They are on welfare because of the constructs and engineering made by this great nation.  The practice of separating fathers from their families in exchange for various welfare benefits (i.e. public housing subsidies, etc.) is something that started in the 1930s and in many cases is still practiced today.  For example, in the state of Virginia, a mom cannot receive child care subsidies unless they place the father on child support–regardless if the father is in the picture providing support for the child/children.

When a mom returns to the workforce, she is immediately penalized with evidence of her completely losing her healthcare (Medicare) benefits, being reduced in her food stamps (SNAP) benefits and her experiencing drastic increases in rent and other programs such as child care.  While she may be no wall street broker- she knows 1+1 should equal 2 and for her, it keeps her and her family in the red.  So she is forced to quit her job just to keep her family afloat.

If the moms stay home and do nothing, she gets the full bottom treasurer of the United States.  FREE Housing, healthcare benefits, food, formula for her babies, and in most cases cash assistance.  If she pokes her head out to chart her course of independence, she and her children are forced to walk the plank alone with no support.

Mathew Knowles and his team resonate with the story of RW Jones and join the nonprofit in their goal to move one million moms off welfare.

Can I Live’s has recently launched the WEALTHFAIR TOUR with its promises to move One Million Moms OFF Welfare over the next decade. The Tour’s newly wrapped RV is on its way to a city near you, visiting some of the nation's poorest public housing communities in America’s wealthiest cities with a message of hope and accountability.

Joining the Wealthfair Tour is the Ultimate Come-Up Conference– A series of deliberate actions, activities, and behaviors that will reduce poverty in America, once and for all. The Ultimate Come-Up Conference (UCUC) will showcase an effective team purposed for the work of uprooting poverty and its root causes.

The UCUC, topics include training sessions for moms, dads, resident council leaders, resident-owned businesses, Section 8 voucher and FSS program participants educating them on the Power of HUD programs (i.e., RAD, Section 3, Resident Councils, Section 8 Homeownership, Moving to Work, FSS, etc.); And how to leverage them for the Ultimate Come-Up!

In addition to these training sessions for families, The Ultimate Come-Up will offer training for Mission-Driven Landlords; Developers, PHA/Resident Services Staff, FSS/ROSS Service Coordinators, and Elected Officials. Some expected training sessions will cover improved service delivery processes to increase program outcomes, revising policies that keep people poor, and effective strategies for growing the affordable housing stock in America and hosing America’s most vulnerable families.

The Wealthfair Tour’s focus on Public Housing communities comes from the notion that public housing authorities hold America’s largest affordable housing stock and as much of HUD’s portfolio will soon be privatized through programs such as RAD (Rental Assistance Demonstration).

As Section 8 vouchers flood the cities, the supply of decent, safe, and affordable housing is stagnant and not sufficient to meet the demand for new vouchers in the market. During this shift of Wealth in America, it is important that we not lose sight of the least of them in our society. It is also critical that residents are not left out of the conversations about equity, and access. With a pending Build Back Better proposal on the table, this is the time for cities, states, and agencies to collaborate with one goal: To help reduce the economic risk that families face when they become employed. This is our reasonable service as leaders.

We invite you to join us as we triumph over poverty with effective strategies that aid cities, states, and families in overcoming the barriers that obstruct the pathways of prosperity.

We are approximately 75 days from the launch of the WEALTHFAIR Tour. A beautifully wrapped RV will tour 300 cities in 3-years visiting public housing authorities with a hopeful message  "We Dont Want Welfare-We Want WEALTHFAIR!"

The entire CIL team is excited as we see all of our hard work coming to life.

Your dollars go towards expertise that helps us with message clarity, digital media strategy, asset framing, marketing position, and a host of other necessary and required capacities that CIL doesn't have. Many of our team members are from low-income communities and lack exposure to high-level projects that helps to grow their knowledge, skills, and abilities.  So the need to hire professionals with expertise that fill our knowledge gaps are always a plus.  We know families!  And because of our ability to live in communities we call home, we are best positioned to offer insight, approaches, and methodologies that produce positive program outcomes.  This is what we do and do well!

We thank you for your support and ask that you continue to support our work!  The next time we report back, we will have launched the tour and will be on the road.

Please stay tuned and connected to our progress.

Can I Live is doing great things and we look forward to doing great things with you!

Thank you for your support of the One Million Moms OFF Welfare (1MMOW) Initiative. While we have raised a short amount of cash during our first phase of the strategic plan, we are in this for the long haul.  We understand the challenges we face in bringing this initiative to past.  These nuances have been apart of our American welfare policies for decades.  That's why this project is so important!

Your support will help us hire consultants that will produce white papers, opt eds, and other statistical resources that will help us share the stories, barriers, and challenges of women and children living in poverty (trapped in the welfare system) here in the United States.

We are working on bringing more exposure to what we do.  Believe it or not, many people don't even know that we exist.  This is why your continued support of our efforts is vital to changing the tides of discrimination, institutional racism, and social justice.

Together we will keep hope alive and well in the hearts of those who love, care, and respect the dignity of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Again, thank you for your support!
