Project Report : Keeping a student in school

Early 2017 Alice was set to join high school. She had in the last quarter of 2016 sat for her KCPE exams and scored an impressive 386 out of possible 500 marks. The first born of two, she knew she had to work harder to rescue herself, her little brother and parents from the shackles of poverty.
Performing well in exams was quite an achievement to her. She knew it was a step in the right direction and closer to realization of her dreams.
But her joy was not to last long.
She had received her calling letter to join an equally high performing girls secondary school. But her jobless parents could barely afford even bus fare to the school.
A week after receiving the letter, her father secured an appointment with the school Principal and requested for more time so he could solicit funds for her school fees. He was added two more weeks. This was time spent moving from one church after another requesting for any form of help. And one church responded positively by issuing a cheque enough to support her school fees for one term.
When Alice reported to her new school armed with the cheque, she was shocked to learn her slot had been allocated to another student who could afford school fees. Not even two days of pleading with the principal and spending a night at the school gate would change the headteacher's mind.
For her inability to afford school fees she lost her slot at the prestigious school.
Her matter came to our attention about a month later and we secured a vacancy in a different school. Our organization has been sponsoring her education ever since.
The harsh experience only served as a motivation to the hardworking girl. From the time of joining the school Alice remained top of her class.
When Covid-19 pandemic struck, Affecto Foundation was worried on how to support Alice and other very needy students from different schools in the Kenya.
We appreciate GlobalGiving for coming through for us. We received 8,403.78 dollars towards our #KeepAStudentInSchoolCampaign. All 86 students in our education program reported back to school on time.
And I have good news for us. Alice and 5 other students just completed their final high school exams. Yes, they have successfully completed the high school phase of education. She cannot believe it. We are more than excited for this milestone.
Thank you all our well-wishers who through GlobalGiving have made this dream a reality. We desired to help but you came through for us in a big way.
We are more than hopeful that you will walk with us through this journey of hope and transformation. A journey of gifting needy but academically gifted children with education.
With great appreciation,
Ndungu Nyoro
Affecto Foundation team leader.
