Summary

Our project trains female community leaders in intervention spaces with knowledge in primary care, prevention, promotion, and education in health, chronic care, the adoption of healthy habits, and the eradication of high-risk behaviors to provide affordable, accessible health care services, medication, treatment, and follow up for vulnerable women in the rural Dominican Republic at risk of developing chronic diseases that affect women disproportionally such as cervical cancer and breast cancer

Challenge

Following the closure of clinical centers and the absence of health programs that address diseases that disproportionately affect women, our communities are presenting the highest rate of cervical and breast cancer, cervical pathologies, HPV, and deficiencies in the health of women compared with other municipalities in the North Coast of the DR. Only 1 in 15 women can afford the cost of health services.

Solution

CHWs identify and screen women at risk of developing chronic diseases and enroll them in a community-led health education support group. Educated women are connected to free clinical services including OBGYN consultation, pap smears, colposcopy, sonograms, vaccination, treatment, and follow-up. Subsequently, empowered women serve as peer educators, who will identify, educate and connect other women and adolescents in the community with the support groups and clinical services offered by HHI

Long-Term Impact

This project will empower 30 female CHWs with knowledge in primary care, prevention, promotion and education in health, chronic care, the adoption of healthy habits, and the eradication of high-risk behaviors; and will provide affordable and accessible women's health services for 300 vulnerable women including breast cancer and cervical cancer screening, OBGYN services, mammography, sonography, vaccination, chronic care, medication and treatment.
