Summary

This project will support the survivors of the landslide that occurred in the famous hot spring and tourist town of Atami on the Izu Peninsula, near Tokyo. Landslide was caused by torrential rains that hit the area on July 3rd, but due to an underlying civil engineering issue where a mountainside swamp had been filled in with earth beyond regulations.

Challenge

Survivors have lost homes, face water shortages, difficulty in getting supplies and going to the hospital etc. due to reduction in bus services, in the hilly environment. There are approximately 700 survivors who need support in this immediate area.

Solution

The project will be delivering essential supplies to the needy, providing free taxi service for elderly survivors unable to get to essential services in the hilly environment, and on-going psychological support through home visits, ascertaining overall needs and providing the link to needed social services.

Long-Term Impact

Over 700 individuals and their families will receive the support they need to get through this difficult time, and rebuild the community.
