Summary

This project will give 300 child labourers a foundation in education and support to progress into school or vocational training. The children attend regular learning periods in literacy, numeracy and life skills with specialist community teachers at education centres local to their workplace. They also get medical care, food and time to experience the joy of learning and being a child. In parallel we work with their families to help them out of poverty so they can provide for their children.

Challenge

Extreme poverty pushes 3.45m children as young as 5 years old into work despite child labour being against the law in Bangladesh. Instead of going to school to learn and enjoy their childhood they work in jobs where they are at risk of exploitation, abuse and harm. Without an education children's life chances are very limited. This project provides education sessions to support working children away from hazardous labour and into school or vocational training and the chance to escape poverty.

Solution

This project provides numeracy, literacy and life skills sessions with specialist teachers at learning centres in child labour hotspots. We liaise with employers and parents to allow the children to attend class three times a week before work. Many are malnourished and have illnesses and injuries, so we also provide nutritious food and healthcare. The goal is to enrol the children into school or vocational training, while helping families out of poverty and into sustainable income generation.

Long-Term Impact

The project will annually educate 300 children in hazardous jobs and support their progress away from child labour into school or vocational training. Every child's literacy, numeracy and life skills will improve as will their levels of health and wellbeing. We will work with the children's families to generate the support they need to rise out of poverty and provide for their household without having to send their children to work. Community advocacy will increase understanding of child rights.
