Most of the children developed their hearing loss after they were born. These boys and girls were born with good hearing, but due to their parents' lack of understanding and difficulties in the Colombian health system, they became deaf due to poorly treated ear infections. This project seeks to educate families about the care, early detection and signs of suspicion of hearing loss in their child and will train educational agents and caregivers to detect hearing loss at an early age.
The current prevalence of hearing loss in Antioquia, Colombia, is rooted in the difficulties of access to screening services in our health system, as well as in the lack of knowledge of parents and professionals related to hearing impairment. Our project will train, educate, and spread awareness of these issues to all the people involved in the child's life so that he / she can receive timely and comprehensive care through hearing screening and educational workshops.
This initiative will sensitize, educate and train all stakeholders and caregivers involved in the child's life, to have the tools they need to detect hearing loss at an early stage. By detecting these hearing losses in time, the child will be able to have an optimal inclusion in his/her family, work and educational life within society.
The long-term impact of the initiative will manifest itself in children who are able to access formal education with hearing children. In this way, they will have the chance to finish their primary school, their baccalaureate, can complete their higher education, and have access to fair employment opportunities. This process of development and inclusion will be the fruit of the awareness of all the actors who have surrounded the child throughout his/her life.
