Our ongoing active investment into infrastructure development and resourcing in local clinics such as the Maunga Clinic in Zambia provides the platform and access to intentionally contribute towards the quality and standard of the health care that is available to our communities. Our commitment towards this facility has been an upgrade to the solar system, provision of a borehole, running water, and ablution facilities. In 2021, we completed the installation of the solar system and borehole. The community now has access to running water and the ablution facilities are fully installed. In addition, we have provided a fridge and sterilization equipment for the clinic.
Thank you for your financial contribution towards this clinic.
With a global pandemic still ranging, we know that as a community coming together is more important than ever. That's why we wanted to share with you how grateful we are for your support towards our project that supports healthcare in rural Zambia. With your donations, we are able to support healthcare workers and provide them with a safe and equipped clinic to work with their patients.
As of right now, we are happy to share that the construction of the ablution block was completed. A dignified and hygienic place for self-sanitization is a human right - and your contributions help make this possible. Now, the ablution block has a toilet and shower facilities.
The next stage for completion is the drilling of the borehole drilling and placing the pipes for water lines. A priority is to ensure the contractor is able to go on site for drilling of the borehole and right now, the team is in the process of obtaining a drilling permit. Thereafter, the solar power will be installed to run the pump to provide running water and electricity to the clinic. There is currently a small solar set up which provides lights and some electricity, however, it is not enough to run the borehole and to adequately provide for the needs of the clinic.
Once the borehole is equipped and running and the clinic has a reliable and sufficient electricity supply, we aim to purchase a fridge for vaccines and medications and sterilization equipment.
The clinic is functional and operating and providing medical care to the community. The Government is aiming to stock the clinic with daily equipment needs. However, as the clinic is adjacent to the school, the nurses are currently staying in one of the rooms usually used as a classroom. The building of adequate nursing accommodation is still a necessary next step to ensure the clinic can fully function to serve the community.
Please continue to spread the word regarding the work we are doing at African Bush Camps - your support is making a huge difference and we are so grateful for your contributions. Thank you.
With COVID restrictions continuing well beyond everyone’s imaginations through the end of 2020 and well into the start of 2021, travel restrictions between towns and villages remained in Zambia and being able to arrange for the purchase, transport and installation of the solar panels, batteries and connect power to both the clinic and the school have once again been further delayed.
A team is now able to travel to the community and we can return to the ground, have the materials delivered so the solar system can be installed with a pump for running water from the current hand pumped borehole and connecting the electivity to the clinic can go ahead.
Once the solar panels have been put in place and the batteries connected, we can ensure that the clinic has a constant water supply, a vaccine fridge for newborns and young children as well as much needed sterilization equipment for the clinic to run safely and fully be able to serve the community.
Updates will be shared as progress now re-commences.
The ongoing support in these challenging times for all is much appreciated.
Due to some unfortunate delays, the solar system for the Maunga Health Centre has not yet been installed. Difficulties with border closures and the availability of equipment has held the project back until just a few days ago.
We have now been able to update quotes and find a supplier. We hope that the systems will be installed during the month of November and that the Health Centre will be able to provide a much wider range of critical services with hot water, proper lighting, and operational equipment long into the future.
Thank you to our kind donors who continue to support our work and this community.
