Climate Learning Opportunity for 225 students in rural Nepal

Southern Lalitpur is one of the core regions where ECCA Nepal has been working in the past two decades to enhance quality education and improve their school environment and the surroundings. ECCA established nature clubs in the local schools and has been providing them various trainings. The most recent training was on the topic - Climate Learning.

The ECCA counselors who had received training on GLOBE protocol were the trainers. The GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) Program  is an international environmental science and education program involving elementary and secondary school students in collecting data concerning their local environment and in sharing the data through the Internet.

The two-days trainings (held in February 2016) included theoretical and practical activities on GLOBE protocols. The training program included 25 participants from each nature club from the following schools:

  1. Shree Bag Bhairab Higher Secondary School - Kaleshwor
  2. Shree Magar Gaun Higher Secondary School - Sankhu
  3. Shree Goth Bhanjyang H.S.S - Dalchoki
  4. Shree Bag Bhairab Secondary School - Chaughare
  5. Shree Gyanodaya L.S.S - Chaughare
  6. Shree Kalidevi H.S.S - Malta
  7. Shree Bhidyadeshori H.S.S - Asrang
  8. Shree Janajagriti H.S.S - Ikudol
  9. Shree Mahakalidevi H.S.S - Bhattedanda

The trainers put forth elaborations on the GLOBE program and conducted discussions on various global environmental issues. Besides, in the training sessions, Nature Club activity plan and importance of greenery management, herbal garden and WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) was also included.

The program proved to be an effective means of information sharing between youths and school students. “The participants were very curious about the functioning of GLOBE program and raised tons of questions”, said Reshav Shrestha, one of the ECCA trainer, “it was a tough yet satisfying experience for me.”

"If we are provided with equipments and have access to internet, I am sure we could be very active in obtaining data and sharing it via internet", said one of the participants at the end of the training session.
