Summary

Of 300 million children enrolled in school in India, 150 million children are in primary education. Nearly 50% of them cannot read well. Inability of children to read, hits India's poorest, and it is the girls, who suffer the most. Parents living in poverty are not able or willing to invest in their girl child's education owing to a history of gender inequality. This leads to entrenched poverty at multiple levels. Sponsor a girl's education, empowering her to be a woman reader-leader of tomorrow

Challenge

Urban India has a high incidence of urban poverty. The Delhi Economic Report says that over 50% of this population lives in "slum like conditions." With nearly two lakh out-of-school children between the ages of 0-14 years in Delhi, girls are at high risk of being neglected, trafficked and forced into early marriages. Education is the only way girls can create a systemic change and empower themselves to come out of this vicious cycle of poverty and patriarchy.

Solution

The project will be run by Katha at our partner government schools or our own Katha Lab School in Govindpuri. We firmly believe that an inclusive approach to economic growth of India would require special attention to quality education, vocational/entrepreneurship skills development for the girl child from under-served sections of our society. Katha has delivered on this front consistently, since 2001 through relevant K-12 education for our youth.

Long-Term Impact

Katha s 300m Challenge programme, (where '300m' stands for 300 million children enrolled in school in India) has been making strides in building partnerships with other non-profits to make every child read across the nation through collective planning and exchange of resources. Through this, we wish to emphasise on girls' education for the longer run, as they are at the most disadvantaged side of the spectrum. We intend to run more girl-child-empowerment programme under the 300m Challenge!
