In March and April one of our Trustees went to visit projects in Subotica on the Serbian-Hungarian border. This is one of the bottlenecks along the Balkan route for refugees wanting to go via Hungary and Austria to Germany. It can take weeks, even months to cross the border. Scabies is a huge problem as it is rife amongst refugees sharing shelter and sleeping bags.Due to poor hygienic conditions and little access to healthcare the consquential risks are severe skin infections which are difficult to treat
We decided to prioritize hygiene and treatment for the most severely affected people as we came acroos them.
First we would offer treatment with antiseptic cream, tablets, antibiotics and showers. Washing and isolating clothing and bedding is not easy, so in many cases we handed out new clothes and sleeping bags after treatment. Also, education on how to avoid scabies has been given
With the money raised via GlobalGiving, nearly 40 people have had the full treatment for Scabies plus a complete set of new clothing and bedding
Via other sources we have give out food parcels, hygiene kits, socks and trainers
Washing machines are being replaced, and mobile showers need constant repair
We will need to raise more money for these projects to carry on but we are really pleased we could help this group of people so far
