Rosaura learning putting rings on a peg
We have great news today! But before letting you know what it is, I would like to share the stories of Rosaura and Wilmy with you!!
Rosaura lives with her father and two younger brothers. She has cerebral palsy which affects her entire body and limbs. Because her father works all day and her brothers attend school, she spent her days laying on her bed and could not leave there because of her condition. Instead of talking, she howled like the dogs that she heard howling from her room, she hurt herself and was aggressive with other people. The family sought help from the Fundación Cuidado Infantil Dominicano and a community Rehabilitation worker began working with her and her family. Rosaura was already 13 years old at that time. A year later Rosaura spends her days with an aunt and enjoys the time with her brothers and her father at night when they return from work and school. She can now eat alone, drink from a glass, move around the house in a wheelchair, communicate with gestures, go outside to get some sun and has learned to have limits. Everyone is happy with the important changes in Rosaura's life and that of her family.
Wilmy Martínez is a 15-year-old young adolescent who suffered a brain hemorrhage at birth, which caused delays in different areas of his development. He had never been to school, but he knew his numbers and was doing simple math when he entered the adolescent program in March 2016. A year later, Wilmy recognizes the letters of the alphabet, writes his name, multiplies without difficulty and even read a few paragraphs with help! He always joyfully attended and supported others. In 2020 Wilmy graduated from the program and is working as a salesperson at an aunt's variety store.
I hope this gives you a little more idea of our work with the families of children with special needs and the adolescents and young people living with disabilities.
First I want to thank you for your continuous support of our programs and the good news is that this week from March 8 to 12 there is a fundraising campaign. All donations up to USD50 dollars will get a 50% match from the GlobalGiving platform.
We appreciate all the support you can give us and would encourage you to share this report with familiy and friends.
