MOMs is an initiative to empower women, especially mothers who cook in our neighborhood by connecting them to a wider audience through smartphone. It is a mobile application designed to bridge the gap between the women who enjoy cooking and the consumers who want a hygienic homemade food.

This initiative is aiming to convert the unpaid care work into the economic empowerment. Bridging the gap through innovation and technology, the women will be benefit to earn from their own kitchen serving the food they cook into their own community.

In doing so, MOMs app has been developing into the final version. The content and the requirements through user experiences are being added and have been tested frequently to reduce the bug. In addition, the app has been incorporated with the Nepali content to make it more user friendly to both the service providers and the customers.

The website has been finalized and was launched on 4th May, 2018. The web portal address would be recognized in following domain www.momsnepal.com. The website caters the informational need for the users regarding the moms app, whereas, it acts an introductory portal for service providers to register themselves as ‘moms service provider’ through registration. The registration for MOMs has started on 2nd May, 2018.

In addition, the Facebook page of MOMs has been released under the page of Mother Of Meals (MOMs). Thorough this Facebook platform the promotion of MOMs has been started as a teaser to the general public. At the end of this month, we have planned to launch MOMs app. By that time, all other supplements entities such as the website and social mediums will be running full-fledged to support the system in parallel base.

Recognizing the need of the service provider, we are planning to recruit women service providers from different locations so they can serve food to the respective locations. As the intersted service provider fills up the form, we will contact them and check their further requirements to be a service provider. We will be having an orientation of the service providers giving details about the MOMs app and its procedure of registration along with its functionalities.

MOMs application is currently under the progress of having its alpha version. Alpha version refers to the version where we will be testing the app after it is uploaded in the google play with limited users. Here we have two major sections: service providers and the users. We will be having the alpha version of the service provders till January 7th.

The report of the Focus Group Discussion(FGD) will also be presented during the first week of January after the transcribing all the surveys. The FGDs were conducted amongst the 5 mothers on an average age of 40.  It was conducted to find out the general conception of the mothers regarding the usage of the internet, their perception towards selling food from home and the recommendation they provide us regarding this type of system.  The report will be delivered on January 3rd.

Progress so far:  Our participation in the GlobalGiving Fundraising Campaign helped us raise $7,826. Our goal is to raise $40,000. Currently, we are looking into avenues to raise the rest of the money, and find affordable location to start the community hub. Despite, the long journey of raising $40,000 we are determined to raise the amount within a year. We also plan to start a basic community hub running by the end of 2017.

Additionally, after further research and piloting, we have realized that the community hub will focus more on maximizing the skills of women in the community rather than providing space. During our pilot phase we also realized that due to lack of mobility women might not be able to use the hub as a co-working space fully. Hence, we decided to develop a platform where they can be a part of the hub staying at home. Right now, we are connecting with women from different cities and recruiting them as food vendors who can provide meals to the offices/ community organizations/individuals at a certain cost. The community hub will still continue to provide skill building workshops and networking meet up for the members of the hub. We had also created a team of three to work on the project.

Next steps: Right now, we are working on the following ideas to get the community hub started:

  • We are recruiting women who would be interested to become a food vendor in their communities.
  • We are in the planning phase of development of an internet based platform to help the the women food vendor receive the orders from the vendor.

Context: One in five women are violated at least once in their lifetime in Nepal. A safe public space where women can effectively learn and lead is very critical. The community hub will provide safe co-working space, resources and workshops to strengthen leadership & entrepreneurship to at least 30 young women in Nepal in one year. This space is an opportunity for young women to have access to safe co-working spaces, collaborate with each other, foster their ideas, and strengthen their networks.

Next steps: Right now, we are working on the following ideas to get the community hub started:

  • We are exploring and reaching out to more individuals to receive donations, including building partnerships with local enterprises who can help us reach our goal.
  • We are looking for affordable location within Kathmandu to lease the space for starting the community hub.
  • We are recruiting a part time team to oversee the planning and execution of community hub by the end of 2017.
