Conduct research to investigate the availability and access to services of adult literacy interventions by different stakeholders and existing interventions that are empowering women and girls with disabilities with equal opportunities. The research will aim to safeguard the rights of women and girls by enlisting their participation and mainstreaming them in development activities. Based on findings, identify gaps and make recommendations to Government of Malawi and other developmental partner.

Despite Malawi's educational efforts, illiteracy remains pervasive particularly among the poor marginalized populations of women and those living with disabilities. Empirical evidence demonstrates that high literacy levels correlate positively with low poverty levels and statistics show that nearly two thirds of all households headed by illiterate parents in Malawi are poor. It has also been almost universally agreed that poverty and environmental degradation are inextricably linked.

This project will aim to empower the poor and vulnerable members of society through literacy and livelihood skills training in order to enable them to identify and find practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges they encounter in their daily life and participate in community and national development processes. Other cross-cutting issues to be actively integrated in the project's activities will include environmental sustainability, civic education and promotion of human rights.

Long-Term Impact

The project is expected to have substantial poverty, gender and social development impacts on enrolled adult learners. There will be improved functional skills among the population, demonstrated behavioral change and improved environmental and restored forests through reforestation and land management practices, improved maternal health and family planning, participation in community development activities and the promotion of civic responsibilities, gender and human rights awareness.
