Kasensa is located in the east of Chibombo district of central province. It is a poor and deprived rural community. This project will build a classroom block and a modern pit latrine toilet, thus providing primary education for rural children especially the girl child; and end early marriages in rural communities of Zambia.
The area has no school, pupils trek between 17 and 19 kilometers to the nearest school. Therefore, pupils trek a total of between 34 and 38 kilometers to and from school daily. Because of the long distance, pupils are at risk especially girl child. Therefore, parents have decided not to send their children to school by asking them to do all sorts of house chores and in the-end marrying them off at a tender age. And on the other hand, boys go fishing in a nearby stream instead of going to school.
A classroom block, an office and store room constructed with modern pit latrine toilet for the school will ensure at least 250 more children enrolled at the school by the third year after completion. This project will give birth to School Management Committee SMC and Parent Teacher Association PTA effectively managing the school and emphasizing on the importance of education especially for a girl child. In addition, with a modern pit latrine there will be no sanitary disease outbreaks in school.
To contribute to the achievement of the MDGs goal of achieving universal primary education, hence benefiting 500 pupils and helping 1000 young people to become independent when it comes to decision making. Girls in rural areas are excluded from education not because of cultural resistance or unwillingness, but because of poverty--the main barrier to girls' education. Pregnancy and early marriages are mostly linked and are the main dares Zambian girls face in staying out of school in rural area.
