We will use your donations to buy --in El Geneina, Darfur-- blankets, food, clothes, sleeping mats and tarpaulins, and also to provide cash assistance for people displaced by recent attacks on the city of El Geneina and surrounding camps. Our board is from this part of Sudan, and so we are better able to communicate directly with people there. From June 2020 through September 2021, we have already distributed such aid to 920 displaced families and another 1,234 displaced individuals.
Our Board and membership are from Darfur, Sudan. In late December 2019, and in January and April, 2021, the greater El Geneina area of West Darfur State suffered massive violence. This includes the two Kerending Camps and in April 2021, Abu Zar Camp. And the displaced from the July 25, 2020 attack on nearby Misterei still need our help. One of our directors has been on-site and is working with displaced leaders to learn what the displaced most need.
Your donations will be administered by our board in the US and our members in El Geneina; it will be used to buy food, tarpaulins, mats, blankets from El Geneina businesses, and to provide cash assistance. So your money will both help the displaced and the local economy. And since our board and membership are from the area and have had at at least one member or Director there for many months now, we can best get the displaced what they most want, even in catastrophic times like these.
Blankets, tarpaulins, food and mats protect against exposure and the illnesses that often come with it. With health comes more ability to plan and act. Also, since we are buying these mats and blankets in El Geneina, West Darfur State, Sudan, your money helps the local economy. Our contacts on-site have told us the displaced suffer from rain and cold, particularly the senior people and the children, especially at night since they have no place to sleep and nothing to cover themselves.
