This project aims to build 12 bamboo houses for vulnerable families that lost their homes during the April 16 2016 7.8 magnitude earthquake and subsequent floods in Rio Teaone, Esmeraldas, Ecuador . These families remain homeless after 2 years. Government programs for the earthquake victims are largely shut down, so these families require external support. Members of these families include elders, small children and/or people with physical or mental disabilities.
Many families remain homeless after the April 16 2016 earthquake. Rio Teaone is a tropical location with heavy rainy seasons from January to June. Homeless families face harsh environmental conditions during the rainy season including floods and malaria outbursts. Homeless children, specially girls, roam the streets and are subject to sexual harassment.
The project will provide 12 families with simple semi elevated , yes durable bamboo homes of 350 square feet in area which is the minimum area for decent living conditions. House design considers its capacity to be upgraded and expanded to meet family present and future needs. Project intervention requires each family and community to contribute with 90 hours of labor to build the house
Homes provide physical protection to families against environmental conditions they also provide a safe and socially healthy environment to raise children and to take care of elders.
