Most of the schools in Nepal are running the classes with the combination of online as well as in-person classes. However, many of them are struggling to meet the prescribed health protocols. Besides, the environment is even more challenging for the schools in the areas closer to India. Considering this fact, the stakeholders from the four schools located in Jhapa district (in eastern Nepal) approached ECCA for the support.

ECCA supported all these four schools with COVID-19 relief materials, which included chlorine solution (a disinfectant, branded as WATASOL), backpack sprayer, and 2 no. informative flex (one related with COVID-19 prevention and another related with uses of chlorine solution).

The ECCA staff met the school stakeholders and provided orientation on the uses of the supported materials These schools are now spraying the chlorine solution with the backpack sprayer to disinfect the classrooms and the school surrounding regularly.

We are thankful for your support.

Monthly Periods during the Pandemic

Government of Nepal recently authorized the local Municipalities to open the schools, as per the COVID-19 situation of the respective Municipality and the capacity of the school. Accordingly, Shree Shishu Sachhyar Basic School situated in Mechinagar Municipality-6, Jhapa district (East Nepal), reopened from mid-November 2020 after being closed for eight months. In order to ensure the implementation of standard public health protocols in the school, urgent action was required to address the menstrual hygiene of the girl students along with other pandemic precautions.

Considering this fact, ECCA supported washable reusable sanitary pads (along with a leaflet containing information on menstrual hygiene management, menstrual cycle tracking paper, and using procedure of reusable sanitary pad) to 60 menstruating girl students of the school.

The economic impact of COVID-19 has been forcing many school girls to prioritize other basic needs over safe menstrual products, which even more emphasizes the support efforts to continue, so the girls can manage their monthly periods safely and hygienically – whatever the situation is.

We are very thankful for your support.

Motivating women group members

ECCA has been developing capacity of women group members living in ward 13, Rapti Municipality, Chitwan district, Nepal. These women group members have now been trained in kitchen garden and solar energy. However, due to remoteness of the village, national electricity grid has not reached there, and hence, they are still using kerosene lamps, which has made daily life difficult for them and their family.

ECCA distributed solar lamps to these women group members, which has now made their daily life easier and has further motivated them in developing their skills. Before the solar lamp distribution, they were provided basic orientation on how to use the provided solar lamp.

We thank you for your support
