Ty Cariad Africa is a registered charity in England and Wales (1124100) which raises awareness and funds to relieve poverty, sickness and distress and to provide access to education amongst orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda. We do not own or run children's homes or any institutions, but work closely with our overseas partner organisations to achieve our aims. Over the past 12 months, together with Victory Child Care Project, we have:- Provided residential care for orphans and vulnerable children. 1 child was admitted for residential care, 9 have been resettled with family members, and 2 have been fostered (9 of these children are still being supported financially for their education and medical costs), and 41 children are still receiving care; Provided temporary care (from a few days to a few months) for children who have been abandoned, lost or trafficked while the police and social workers trace and reunify the children with their family members. We started 2018 with 3 children receiving temporary care, 17 children were admitted for residential temporary care, 10 children were reunified with family, and 10 are still receiving care; Supported the local community by providing access to education, helping to reduce the risk of vulnerability and possible abandonment. 28 children have received sponsorship for education costs - without this support, they would not be able to receive education. 330 of the most vulnerable girls from the local district have been supported with reusable sanitary towels and underwear, ensuring that they can receive education during their periods, keeping them in school and keeping them safe. Funded 3 emergency surgical operations - 2 umbilical hernias and 1 facial tumour. The partnership with Victory Child Care Project (VCCP) has developed since its inception in 2004, and we have adapted the provision of child care support, in line with the needs of orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda. Initially the project served just as a children's home, but over the past few years the provision of services has developed, and we are one of a few pioneers in Uganda actively involved in the resettlement of children back into families and foster care - (where it is in the best interest of the child, and with education fees paid). We now also provide temporary care for abandoned and rescued children. This provision has been recognised by Ugandan Police, the Ministry of Gender, and SAUTI childline, who now often partner with us to provide these services for those most in need. Over the last 3 years, we have supported an average of 307 children (estimated 442 in current year) and 34 families per year.
