Women empowerment is also very important because no country will develop keeping half of its population in darkness. Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been trying to improve the life standard of those women by homestead vegetable gardening, duck and ram raring, tailoring etc.
The women of Mathurapur village of Shyamnagar sub district of Satkhira district are the example of the worst sufferers. The people of Mathurapur village live below the poverty line and subjected to several natural disaster like cyclones, soil salinity. The women are continuously struggling with poverty, natural disasters and social conflicts. BEDS has identified that the women are interested in tailoring like small cottage industry and some of them are good in tailoring. But they are unable to conduct the activity commercially due to the lack of proper training and money. For this reason, BEDS has taken an initiative to empower 50 women of Mathurapur village by developing their skill on sewing and also providing them equipments related to sewing through raising fund from GlobalGiving platform.
So, it’s a heartiest appeal to all the donors for being kind to help those vulnerable women to give them a chance to come out from the cycle of poverty and lead a risk free life and also making a better future for their future generation.
Mangroves play an important role of protecting coasts and creating livelihood opportunity among the people. BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) has been working for restoring mangroves since 2013.
Till now BEDS has planted 2,70,000 mangroves in the Sundarbans coastal region. BEDS has established community based 6 mangrove nurseries in the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh. Now the people are earning much money from the mangrove nursery.
One of our beneficiaries said, “I have grown up by the side of Sundarbans. I live very close to Sundarbans. I could not do heavy work and go different places due to my health issue. I used to pass my time leisurely in my home. BEDS motivated me to do a mangrove nursery. I started working in the mangrove nursery. My nursery is by the side of the road. People used to taunt me that I was wasting my time with the plants. It used to hurt me but I continued my work in the nursery to pass my leisure time. Now I am selling the saplings and demand of the mangrove saplings is increasing day by day. The people has understood the result of the mangrove nursery. They also come to me to now the techniques of mangrove nursery. I am getting much money from the nursery and I am very happy.”

BEDS has taken an initiative to Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture at Paschim Dhangmari village under Dacope sub district of Khulna district. 20 shrimp farmers are engaged in Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture. In their planting mangroves in their farms and helping to create mangrove ecosystem for the shrimps and other fish species. So that the fishes can get their feed from mangrove ecosystem. The farmers are practicing organic farming.
One of our beneficiaries expressed his feeling, “I live very close to Sundarbans. We are shrimp farmers. We earn money by selling the fishes. We produce shrimps and other fishes but do not get much profit. BEDS has motivated us to perform Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture in our farms. For this reason, a wider dyke has been made for mangrove plantation. We plant the mangroves in the dykes and other higher land inside the farm. We take care of the mangroves. In heavy rain and floods our fishes did not wash away due to strong dyke and also for the mangroves in the dyke. In Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture production cost has been reduced. We are also getting profit from the planted mangroves. I collect Nipa Palm and sell them and earn money. We are getting much profit of the mangrove based organic shrimps.”
